Le Flâneur presents a selection of photographs made by Ross Cunningham over the past twenty-five years. Trained as an architect, Cunningham turned to photography as his primary creative outlet while building a career in the wider creative industries. Alongside his work as a graphic designer and creative director of a London-based design studio, he has photographed extensively across numerous countries, balancing commercial commissions with long-term personal projects.

Across this body of work, spanning 3 decades and 5 continents, recurring themes emerge that transcend both time and location. Cunningham is repeatedly drawn to unexpected architectural form, graphic signage, and the visual poetry of the everyday. Through bold colour, careful composition, and an acute sense of perspective, overlooked objects and ordinary details are transformed into images of quiet significance.

A defining influence was Cunningham’s first encounter with the colour photography of William Eggleston, who famously said, “I am at war with the obvious.” That same sensibility—to discover beauty and meaning in the overlooked, the peripheral, and the seemingly mundane—lies at the heart of the work contained in these volumes of Le Flâneur.

Many of Eggleston’s celebrated prints were produced using the dye transfer process, a technique adapted by Technicolor for the film industry and now largely unavailable for commercial use. Its richly saturated colours were achieved by transferring separate colour plates back onto the original negative. In this body of work, advanced HDR digital processes and refined post-production workflows are employed to evoke similar colour relationships. The result is an expanded colour gamut and tonal range in the final print, echoing the depth and intensity once achieved through dye transfer.

Le Flâneur

On Flâneuring

The flâneur’s tendency toward a detached but aesthetically attuned observation has brought the term into the literature of photography, particularly street photography. The street photographer is seen as one modern extension of the urban observer, described by nineteenth century journalist Victor Fournel before the advent of the hand-held camera:

‘This man is a roving and impassioned daguerreotype that preserves the least traces, and on which are reproduced, with their changing reflections, the course of things, the movement of the city, the multiple physiognomy of the public spirit, the confessions, antipathies, and admirations of the crowd.’

A notable application of the flâneur to street photography comes from Susan Sontag in her 1977 collection of essays, ‘On Photography’. She describes how, since the development of hand-held cameras in the early 20th century, the camera has become ‘the tool of the flâneur’.

In his monumental, unfinished work ‘The Arcades Project’, German philosopher Walter Benjamin famously adopted the idea of the flâneur—the leisurely urban stroller—as a tool to decode the capitalist, commodity-obsessed landscape of the modern metropolis. Benjamin elevated this concept from a romanticised observer into an analytical archetype. He treated the city as a readable text. For the flâneur, shop fronts, streetlamps, and unknown faces become a “wealth of equally valid letters of the alphabet”. He wandered the streets without destination, consuming the visual spectacle of the crowd while remaining profoundly alienated from it. In the world but not of it. Empathetic but indiscriminate. A recorder of things.
